These roofs are made from any type of material: metal, terra cotta tile, clay slabas, asphalt, and even wood/. They are the typical American rooftop. They are mostly on buildings; commonly seen as the triangular shape which is why they call them the pitched rooftops. The gable roof shapes are ideal for the draining of the water and of snow. This prevents moisture accumulation on the rooftop. hese roofs also provide sufficient space for vaulted ceilings and attics. This spaciousness also facilitates ease of ventilation in buildings that have these kinds of roofs.

The con to these though are that they are easily damaged during heavy weatherstorms such as hurricanes and hight winds. They can be damaged nonetheless if you live in an area where this happens frequently. Nevertheless, they should be built with strong foundational home structures along with “braces” that are strong as well to prevent damaging from heavy weather.

The main caveat of having gable roofs is that they can easily be damaged by extreme weather. High winds and hurricanes can easily lift off the roof from its base, causing severe damage. This roof must, therefore, be built with strong structural foundations and strong braces to prevent damages during strong weather.

Hip Roof

The hip roofs are four sided roofs. They equal the length with that of the slope. They should all “converge” and then form a ridge at the center top of the roof.

These can be labeled in three different categories:

  • The Simple Hip Roof: These have two sloped sides to it which meet at the center. It’s also the most popular amongst the three.
  • The Half-hipped roof: This is self-evident because it basically is a shortened hip rooftop. They create eaves.
  • The Cross hip roof: The typical hip rooftop has a valley at the center and roofing contractors find them more popular. They also have various wings to them.

The pros to having a hip roof is the stability and because the slopes on this type of roof does make it durable and more sturdy. This is the reason for it’s popularity. It also drains water easier because of sloped sides; this makes it ideal for areas where the snow and the rain are more common to fall.
